In
the event of a recall situation, Fresh Kist Produce LLC has a product
recovery program to effectively remove and return the product involved
from consumers, retailers, foodservice distributors, and/or wholesalers.
Contact List:
The sales manager in Salinas or in
Santa Maria should be contacted immediately,
if a recall situation develops. The sales manager with the assistance
of the chief financial officer or assistant controller will be responsible
for determining the destination of all of the potentially contaminated
product and to notify all of the consignees involved. The sales manager
will continue to follow up and monitor the effectiveness of the recall.
Bar Coding:
A bar coding system has been installed in all Fresh Kist shipping locations
to track product. Pallet tags are placed on all pallets as product is
received. The pallet tag is bar coded enabling Fresh Kist to track product
through out the distribution cycle: inbound product on receipt, handling
through the coolers, loading over the road trucks, and on arrival at consignees.
The bar code identifies numerically, the grower, ranch, date packed, and
product type.
A consignee may occasionally receive a partial pallet without a pallet
tag. However, partial pallets can be tracked through our computer system.
This means we can track the product, as long as we have a ship date and
purchase order number.
Recall Procedure:
When all of the information is gathered regarding the lot in question,
the sales manager will contact all customers via fax and certified letter
and follow up with a fax to inform each of the customers of the recall
situation. The information will include the specific reason for the recall
and the required action. In addition, a letter and a questionnaire will
be sent to each customer verifying their awareness of the recall and the
action taken.
As product is returned Fresh Kist will consult with Primus Laboratories
to determine the proper method of disposal. All returned product and disposal
will be documented.
Follow up:
The sales manager will be responsible to verify that the customer received
notice of the recall and is taking the appropriate action. Monitoring
the amount of returned product will be used to measure the effectiveness
of the recall.
Status reports will be used to update the individuals involved in the
recall. The reports will include the following information:
